Now in his 60’s, the transplanted Southerner lives in the Detroit area and spent many years in the auto industry. He is very reclusive and not very accessible. Somehow, I found favor with him. Right away when I met John I liked him and what he was doing. He seemed to like me and he seems happy to be working with me.....in the last couple years I've sold A LOT of his paintings.
He lives on a fixed income and cares for an invalid family member. Art is a form of release and relaxation for him. He’s been painting for several years and has become obsessed with creating folk art.
In the beginning he had an extensive collection of auto license plates. On those he has mainly painted flags and other patriotic themes. Then, he turned to painting animals. He would also occassionally create some assemblages from the old plates
After several years of painting, he is geting low on license plates and has reached out in a couple of new areas. One is painting on corrugated and other salvage cardboard.
We recently gave John a used band saw and he has started creating scrap wood cutouts. We have added several to our personal collection and are now offering other collectors the chance to get in on the ground floor for John's NEW items.
